'Most important job of my life'

chief servitor of Goddess Subhadra

I am blessed and fortunate that I was born in the family of a servitor. Perhaps, I had done something good in my previous life that led to my birth in the servitor's family. Nothing more can be satisfactory than doing the service of the Lords.

I had prayed to Goddess Subhadra to assign me the honour of transferring the Brahma and she listened to me. You cannot imagine how excited I am to do the job. For me, she is my mother. I have a strong belief that what is happening in the world is because of Her command.

After the temple administration announced my name three days back, I have been trying to master the courage to perform the most important job of my life. Even though I do have blood pressure and gastric issues, I have nothing to worry at this moment.

I lost my wife eight years ago and my two sons are married and settled. At present, I have no liabilities in my life. I earned a lot and enjoyed my life and now the only job left for me is to dedicate and surrender myself to the feet of the Lord. Of course at this moment when I am standing on the crossroads of my life, the face of my beloved wife flashes in my memory.

She must be happy seeing that I am going to do the job. The wife of a servitor has a big role to play. But we cannot reveal it to the society. Now, the same job is done by my daughter-in-law. She is doing it sincerely with great devotion.

The miraculous things that we had witnessed since we left our home on March 29 in search of the wood, then bringing it to Puri till the making of the new idols, will make you strongly believe in the presence of the divine power. God is doing it all. He works through us. We are His instruments only.

Many mysteries are associated with the Jagannath culture and no one can visualise and realise it till he is involved in the entire process. All rituals related to the changing of idols are done in a most sacred manner. We are bound by laws that we cannot reveal anything.

My father and uncle, who had done it earlier in 1977 and 1996, did not reveal any of their experiences to me.

I am not aware of what would really happen in the darkness when the Brahma is transferred from old idol to the new idol.

I have a faint memory of 1977. After changing the Brahma, my father came out, hugged every one and cried like a child. The tears that came out were the tears of joy and a lifetime satisfaction. Now, I am waiting anxiously to experience the same.
