Kendrapara, Aug. 30: The scientific zeal of students got ample boost at a science exhibition organised at St Joseph’s School here today.
The children presented a gamut of innovative and creative models to offer solutions to important issues such as the use of unconventional and renewable energy resources, disaster preparedness alarm system, rainwater harvesting, mechanisation of agriculture, conservation of fragile biodiversity, homemade water purifiers, space science and many other topics. Visitors, including parents, teachers and science enthusiasts, who thronged the venue, were all praises for the little scientists.
“It is an initiative on our part to hone the scientific temperament and technical expertise among students. Textbooks may enlighten them, but events such as this create avenues for a much-needed exposure for them. The science fair is an annual event, which witnesses huge participation from students,” said James Tharaniyil, principal of the host school.
“Participation in such events helps develop a mindset for innovation and creativity,” said Pravin Kumar Mahapatra, a guest at the fair. “It motivates the younger generation to achieve bigger goals in the field of science and technology,” he added.
Miniature scientific models, developed by young minds, promising solutions to reduce wastage of energy and helping recycle effluents or wastes sparkled at the fair. “It was an excellent display of scientific temperament by students,” said Himanshu Kishore Rout, one of the evaluators of the exhibition. One of the prize winners Abhinandan Manna expressed joy at the opportunity to prove his mettle.
“I hail from a seaside village, which is prone to cyclonic storm and tidal surge. As mangrove forest is a natural barrier against natural calamities, we set up an exhibit on mangrove forest. It was appreciated quite a lot by the visitors,” he said. Other students, who walked away with the top honours in senior and junior categories, were Prabhu Datt Panda, Nitish Kumar Jena, Sk. Soibuddin, Amrit Choudhury, Anshuman Pati SoumyaRanjan Parida, Mahesh Das, Amlandeep Nayak, Amlan Kumar Satpathy, Avilash Mohanty, Harishankar Sahu, Jivan Jyoti Nayak, Devi Prasad Mishra, Ankit Satpathy, Bibhas Kumar Sahu, Utkal Kumar Sahu, Debraj Mahapatra and Nilesh Suar.
