Cuttack: Two days after postgraduate doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital went on cease work, the impasse continues with the strikers refusing to budge despite completion of inquiry into their allegations against the head of department of urology.

The 450-medico strong Postgraduate Doctors' Union has been boycotting hospital duty since Monday demanding "impartial inquiry" into alleged "mental and physical harassment" of their fellow members in the urology department.

The union had taken up their demand for inquiry into their charges with the dean and principal on February.

General secretary of the union Phanindra Kumar Swain said: "Though an inquiry has been on since Tuesday, we have decided to wait and watch for the outcome in terms of action before deciding to call off our cease work".

"The inquiry was demanded after postgraduate doctors of the urology department had alleged that they were being constantly mentally harassed and abused by their head of the department," Swain said.

Though efforts to contact dean and principal Sidhartha Das remained futile, sources in his office said a four-member committee constituted on February 17 had started inquiry on Tuesday.

All the 13 postgraduate doctors of the urology department and head of the department Duteswar Hota have deposed before the committee on Tuesday.

The manage hospital functioning, authorities had since Tuesday put on duty doctors from the non-clinical departments and para-medical departments on duty.

Superintendent-in-charge of the hospital Prashanta K. Nanda said on Wednesday that the director health services had been asked to immediately provide periphery doctors. Eight periphery doctors have been provided so far.

"Patient care is being managed with these emergency measures," Nanda said.
