A role model is someone who influences one’s life in a positive manner, and shapes one’s thoughts and actions. My greatest inspiration is former President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, popularly known as “missile man”.

“A dream is not what you see when asleep but a dream is what does not let you sleep”, is a famous quotation of the scientist. Words of wisdom such as this have encouraged the youth of today to achieve what people often perceive impossible.

President Kalam, though born into a poor family, dared to dream big and rose to dizzy heights with his strong willpower and self-confidence. He inspires us to do the same. When I was just about three years old, my mother used to tell me about Kalam, the then India’s president. I could barely understand what President meant and what he did, but his name was etched in my mind.

A few years later, I saw on television a man with dark complexion and long, grey hair. My mother told me it was President Kalam and one day I should become as successful as him. But I disagreed. I told her the man appeared odd to me and I must have another role model.

As luck would have it, I stumbled upon a few books by President Kalam and realised how inspiring and great a person he is! I started reading about his life and contribution to science, which motivated me a lot. I realised behind the long, grey hair was a brilliant brain. He is a true hero and I wish to follow in his footsteps so that I can inspire others.
