Bhubaneswar, Oct. 3: The scene at the Horse Ground of the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry yesterday resembled a health camp for young children. Anxious people were waiting in long queues. Even the harsh weather did not dampen their spirits.
This was, however, not a health camp for children but dogs. At the two-day Pooch Carnival which concluded here today, dog owners were given grooming tips and a detailed health analysis of their best friends.
Hosted by Leo Club and Lion's Club of Bhubaneswar, the health camp for dogs saw a number of city residents and their precious poodles participating.
"Within an hour, 84 pet owners registered for their canine's check-up," said Jiban Jyoti, a veterinary student.
From sought-after breeds such as Siberian husky, dalmatian, golden retriever, rottweiler, daschund, pug, boxer and cocker spaniel to common breeds like pomeranian, spitz and even street dogs adopted as pets were groomed. Pet owners got their dogs vaccinated for free while health kits were also distributed for the pets.
A host of young and senior veterinary doctors studied the dogs for various diseases. The vets also gave the pet owners tips on how to take care of their dogs and answered their questions on health, fitness and grooming.
"Awareness about taking good care of dogs is increasing in the city. The owners are conscious about their food habits, fur care and behavioural training. It was good to see people bringing their pets," said senior veterinarian S.K. Ray.
The event featured a session for pet owners to share their best moments with their canine friends and animal behavioural experts gave tips for better bonding between pets and their owners.
"There have been annual dog shows in the city but a health camp is an unusual event. We are thankful to the organisers," said Shanti Tripathy, a pet owner.
