Bhubaneswar, July 13: The state government has made it mandatory for schoolchildren to have Aadhaar registration. It has created a Student Database Management Information System to tag Aadhaar numbers of students from Class I to X to the database.

The government has set a deadline of July 31 and asked district education officers to update the numbers within the stipulated time. There are nearly six lakh children in state-run schools.

The state government direction comes four months after the Union human resource development ministry made Aadhaar cards mandatory for midday meals in schools.

"The system will be the single source of data of students to provide benefits through all state and central government schemes," said school and mass education secretary Ranjana Chopra.

The Supreme Court yesterday announced that a five-judge Constitution bench would hear matters related to Aadhaar on July 18 and 19. A three-judge bench of the apex court had refused to pass an interim order against the Centre's notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing of benefits under social welfare schemes.

In Odisha, headmasters and teachers have been asked to collect copies of Aadhaar cards of each student in their respective schools and record the numbers in the school register.

They have also been asked to facilitate Aadhaar enrolment for students who are not under its purview. They have also been told to submit a list of students not covered under Aadhaar to the block education officer concerned.

The government will also allow the teachers concerned to hold meetings with parents and ensure that they provide their children with Aadhaar numbers. They have been asked to visit the homes of students to mobilise their parents for Aadhaar enrolment so that all children are eligible for the benefits. The planning co-ordinators at the block education officer level will ensure the data entry of Aadhaar numbers of students within the stipulated time.
