Girls outshine boys at varsity exams

Girls have outperformed boys in undergraduate examination at the Ravenshaw University, the results of which were announced here this evening.

Cuttack, May 28: Girls have outperformed boys in undergraduate examination at the Ravenshaw University, the results of which were announced here this evening.

As many as 173 girls feature in the top 10, while 88 boys have topped in various departments in arts, science, commerce and other professional courses.

Vice-chancellor of the university P.K. Sarangi said though the overall pass percentage of boys has been 95.03 per cent, 66.28 per cent girls have secured the top 10 positions.

Out of 1,765 students, who had appeared in arts, science and commerce, 1,654 have passed with 93.71 per cent.

Shreya Bagchi (physics) and T.R. Divya (information technology and management) have been declared the best students in 2015. Bagchi has secured 1,937 marks out of 2,000, while Divya has scored 1,790 in the examination.

"We are happy with the performance of the students and for the first time the university has published the results within 15 days," said Sarangi. He said 225 students have passed in first division in arts, 604 students in science and 438 students in commerce.

University officials said Ravenshaw University had been successful in retaining students as 1,765 had appeared in the undergraduate examination against 1,864 seats in arts, science as well as commerce.

Earlier, 1,511 students had appeared in the examination when the total seats at the varsity was nearly 2,000 in 2011. Altogether 1,427 students had appeared in 2012, 1,557 in 2013 and 1,756 in 2014.

"After taking admissions a lot of students used to shift to other technical courses. But this time we have been able to retain them by offering better educational facilities," Sarangi added.

Varsity officials said a lot of new initiatives were being planned for improving the semester system and examination pattern. There is also talk of introducing new courses at the educational institution.
