Bhubaneswar, Oct. 11: Calypso king Chris Gayle loves to do it, American TV host Ellen DeGeneres is obsessed with it, and party hoppers, er, gallopers, here are grooving to it on every dance floor. Gangnam Style, the latest YouTube sensation, is what we are talking about.

The Korean pop track, which has set a Guinness World Record with over four billion hits on the video-sharing website, is spinning out of control from DJ consoles. “Every night, I get at least six to seven requests to play the song. It is a proper electro dance mix and the Bhubaneswar crowd loves it. It is the most happening song at the moment and will be the flavour of the festive season,” said DJ Tushar of Underground, HHI.

Partygoers seem to have mastered the signature steps — horse riding and lasso-ing motion — of the stocky South Korean rapper, Park Jae-Sang or Psy (short for Psycho) in the four-minute music video in which he is seen frolicking around stables, condos, swimming pools and parking lots.

“Most foreign music videos are never so much about dance, but this one sets the adrenaline pumping. I have internalised the song frame by frame and the steps are pretty easy to follow. So what if most of the lyrics are unintelligible, the Oppan Gangnam Style portion is enough to get one into the groove,” said Sumeet, a management student.

The Gangnam craze started picking up in the state capital almost a fortnight ago but the trickle of following for the song turned into a torrent after the Windies triumph in the T20 World Cup last Sunday. Gayle and Windies skipper Darren Sammy launched into the Gangnam groove just after claiming the T20 crown.

Gayle the Gangnam was spotted first on Friday when the Caribbean marauder showed off his PSY-inspired moves after his team’s thrashing of Australia. The effect spilled on to the studio where former England skipper Kevin Pietersen showed off his own style of Gangnam dance.

Even tennis star Novac Djokovic, after winning the China Open title, amused his fans in Beijing by doing a PSY. “I was talking to fans who suggested to me to do that dance at the end of the tournament in case I win. I had to hold my promise, and it was fun. I think it was obvious that I was the worst dancer there out of the small group, but it still was quite a lot of fun,” said Djokovic.

The fun video — which has already set a Guinness World Record for the maximum number of ‘likes’ at 3,690,571 — has topped the US iTunes chart and even unseated boy band One Direction from the top of the UK chartbusters list. Now, it is ready to rule the floor in town.

Actress Prakruti Mishra, who was spotted at an event organised by The Telegraph on Sunday doing the Gangnam dance to the T, admits to being smitten by the cowboy steps.

“Whenever I hear the song, I cannot help but break into a jig. I dance to it at nightclubs, at home, everywhere. I have even set the song as my ringtone,” said the actress.

When DJ Ravi introduced the pop song to the party crowd at The Cellar of Hotel Mayfair Lagoon in Bhubaneswar, he was bowled over by their response. “People paused for a while during the first half of the song, and went about doing routine disco steps. So, I performed the steps casually to pep them up and it was great to see everyone following me,” he said.

The disc jockey said he doesn’t usually play the same song twice in one night but has hardly been able to restrain himself as far as Gangnam is concerned. ‘

“People request me to play the track every half-an-hour, but I try not to play more than thrice,” Ravi added.

It is not just youngsters who are addicted to the song, the older generation, too, is tuning into the song on their laptops and iPads. “I first learnt about the craze for Gangnam Style from the newspapers. Then I checked the music video on YouTube and I have to admit that I watch it at least once every day,” said Dharashree Patnaik, 42, a corporate consultant.

The Gangnam steps are a great way to lose weight, said 22-year-old Shilpa.

“I have been rehearsing it for about a week and I have lost two kilos. When you jump and skip like PSY three hours a day, your flab just has to go,” she said.
