For a green cause

Students of Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, organised a sapling plantation and donation drive called X-Pallavan in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

Students of Xavier University, Bhubaneswar, organised a sapling plantation and donation drive called X-Pallavan in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. The drive was hosted in association with the state forest and environment department and the CK group of companies. Priyadarshi Mishra, MLA, Bhubaneswar North, and Ananta Narayana Jena, mayor, Bhubaneswar, were the chief guests. A wasteland opposite Fortune Tower was cleared for the plantation drive. Students organised such drives at eight locations.

Nobel lecture

Nobel laureate Johannes Georg Bednorz, a German physicist, who along with K. Alex Müller discovered high-temperature superconductivity, addressed 2,000 students of KIIT University on August 27. The event was a part of the Nobel lecture series. Bednorz spoke about the use of superconductors in hydropower, wind power, plasma physics and medicine. He also discussed research challenges of superconductivity. He interacted with the students about latest developments in the technology. A. Samanta, founder, KIIT & KISS, and faculty from various schools took part in the event.

Science made easy

Students of the department of physics at NIT Rourkela organised a seminar on the “Effect of gamma irradiation on structural and magnetic properties of bi-substituted cobalt ferrite nanoparticles” recently. D. Behera, a well-known figure in the field of gamma irradiation and nano technology, addressed the seminar. He spoke about cobalt ferrites and various scientific techniques associated with it. 

Foundation day

The Central University of Odisha, Koraput, celebrated its 8th foundation day in Sunabeda on Monday. Vice-chancellor Sachidananda Mohanty hoisted the university flag and inaugurated the event. A lecture on “Discovering many lives of Rabindranath Tagore” was conducted by professor of Rabindra Bhawan Uday Narayan Singh. He called for unity among the students to achieve individual goals. Certificates and prizes were also distributed among students .

Tribute to Pathy

Eminent artist Dinanath Pathy, who passed away on Monday, was remembereed at the Balasore Art and Crafts College on August 29. Students, teachers and college faculty spoke about his creations and contributions to the field of contemporary art. Pathy was a regular visitor to the college. Students who had interacted with him shared their memories. The condolence meeting was presided over by artist Ashok Mohanty. The principal of the college, Nikunja Bihari Das, and local artists of the district paid tributes to Pathy. 

For social people

An organisation based in Bhubaneswar, Swabhiman, hosted a youth leadership training at its skill development training centre in Koraput from August 23 to August 25. Around 25 differently-abled students in Plus Two and graduation courses attended the programme.

Hostel to godown

Students of Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja College of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district said the ladies hostel of the college was being used as a go-down. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik had laid its foundation stone in August 2010 and the construction cost was Rs 59.84 lakh. Students said the inauguration was being deliberately delayed to allow the contractor to store his construction materials. 

For Daana’s sake

Students of Gangadhar Meher University, including students’ union representatives, took part in a silent sit-in to protest against the plight of Daana Majhi. Students, civil society members, writers and senior citizens protested for more than two hours in front of the district collector’s office. The protesters condemned the undignified disposal of bodies in the state.

Field trip

Agri-business management students of Sri Sri University, Cuttack, visited an organisation called Sambhav to get hands on experience in sustainable agriculture models to save indigenous plant species. They learnt about biodiversity conservation, forest protection and watershed management. Other students of the varsity took part in an event called “Start-up Weekend” powered by Google.
