Jajpur, June 8: An FIR was registered against a senior medical officer for allegedly assaulting a patient’s attendant and making casteist remarks.

In his complaint Sarat Jena, of Abhayapur in Dharmasala police station area, accused medical officer of Dharmasala community health centre (CHC) Ramesh Chandra Sahu and his associates of assaulting and abusing him. Jena had been there for the treatment of a person injured in an accident.

He also alleged that the doctor’s son, Lucky Sahu, and his driver had beaten him.

Jena said he, along with a few other villagers, had taken an injured patient to Sahu’s residence, where he runs his private clinic on Monday evenings. But the doctor refused to treat and asked them to take the patient to the CHC at Dharmasala.

When the injured was being treated by the hospital staff, the doctor arrived with his accomplices and started assaulting Sarat. Another person, Biswanath Jena, too sustained injuries in the process.

Though Sarat and Biswanath refused to elaborate on the reasons for the provocation, the doctor alleged that they had damaged his car.

The doctor, however, denied having assaulted and abused Sarat. He has also lodged a counter complaint with the police.

Though the matter was reported to the police immediately after the incident, the cops did not take any action. On being directed by the district superintendent of police, a case was registered on Tuesday.

“We have registered a case on the basis of a complaint lodged by Sarat Jena. An officer of the rank of a deputy SP will conduct a probe as the complainant belonged to the scheduled caste and had alleged that the doctor had made derogatory and casteist remarks,” said Suvendu Kumar Sinha, inspector in-charge of Dharmasala police station.
