Engine hits goods train

Berhampur, July 31: Train services were affected as two wagons and the brake van of a goods train derailed when a shunting engine hit it from the back in between Narasinghpur and Jagannathpur, about 15km from here, today morning.

The coal-loaded goods train was on its way to Simadri in Andhra Pradesh from Talcher, according to the railway sources.

Guard of the goods train Lingamahanty Narayan, who hails from Palasa, suffered injury on his head and hand. He had been admitted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, but after a few hours he was discharged.

“The second engine shunted with the goods train at Ganjam railway station to boost the speed. But, its couplings detached on the way when it reached at a spot 2km from Narasinghpur. I immediately informed the driver of the front engine about the incident who slowed down the train,” said the guard.

“It was out of my control to apply brake as the driver of the front engine slowed down the train and my engine hit the brake van where the guard was sitting,” said the rear engine driver, who requested not to divulge his name.

Under the impact of the collision the front side of the rear engine was partially damaged and two last wagons of the goods train got derailed. However, the tracks were not damaged, said a railway official.

A relief train from Khurda reached the accident spot one hour later with the railway personnel to clear the tracks. They cut the brake van mingled with the rear engine with the help of gas cutter.

They also cleared the two wagons and the coal from the track which took about three hours.

The Walipuram-Kharagpur train had been detained at Berhampur railway station for three hours, while the Puri-Gunupur train was regulated at Khallikote and the Gunupur-Puri one at Ichhapuram.

The Tirupati-Puri Express was detained at Sorala, Visakhapatnam-Sikanderabad and Vijayanagram-Bhubaneswar ones were detained at Ichhapuram after the accident, said Berhampur railway station master Durga Prasad Brahma.
