Bhubaneswar, July 16: Actor Tanmay Mohanty alias Babusan today denied having any account on any social networking site after a woman from Sundergarh alleged that a Facebook account in the name of the actor had sought donation of Rs 50,000 from her for the treatment of his father.

However, the woman is yet to lodge a police complaint in this regard.

The woman, Bandita Bag, alleged that she had become friends with Babusan on Facebook a few months ago. "We had a chat through the social networking site and the account holder requested me to donate Rs 50,000 for treatment of his ailing father. The Facebook account holder also provided a bank account number, but I suspected foul play and did not deposit the money," said the woman.

However, the Odia film star clarified that he does not have any social media account. "I found that several accounts have been opened on social networking sites in my name through which funds are being collected. This is completely illegal and I want to tell my fans that I don't have any account on social networking sites. There are around 30 fake accounts in my name on social networking sites. Several such fake accounts have been created in the names of other actors as well. I urge my fans not to become victim of such frauds," said the actor.

Police said a number of cyber criminals are involved in creating fake accounts of Odia actors on social networking sites. "The fake account holders often collect money in smaller amounts on the pretext of helping others and taking up social causes. They deliberately demand small amounts of money so that the cheated fans don't lodge complaints," said a police official.

In March 2012, the office of chief minister Naveen Patnaik had issued a clarificationthat Facebook accounts existing in the name of Naveen Patnaik were not genuine. The chief minister's office had also appealed to the people not to be misguided by such accounts. The clarification was made after the chief minister's office found people interacting with the chief minister on various issues through fake accounts. Naveen made his debut on Facebook in May last year. At present, more than 1.6 lakh people are following him on Facebook.
