Keonjhar: A tribal man killed his mother-in-law in an inebriated state at a remote village in the district on Tuesday.

Jaga Munda barged into his in-laws' house at Manoharpur village in Dhenkikote of Ghatagaon police station area and had a heated altercation with his mother-in-law Nadi Munda.

When Nadi scolded Jaga for committing alcoholic nuisance and asked him to get out of the house, Jaga picked up a bamboo stick and hit her on the back of her head. Nadi was rushed to Dhenkikote Hospital in a profusely bleeding condition, where she was declared brought dead, said investigating officer Bharat Chandra Nayak. Jaga's wife Malli had earlier left him for his alcoholism. Malli had been staying at her parental house and she was present at the spot when the tragic incident took place on Tuesday night.

Jaga surrendered before police and was found repentant for committing the murder. Jaga was charged with Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code Section and was remanded in judicial custody.

A couple of days ago, a tribal man had stabbed his younger brother to death in an inebriated state in Nandipada police station area. Alcoholic violence is being reported almost everyday in the tribal-dominated areas of the district. " We are trying to involve civil society groups for sensitising people to give up liquor," said sub-divisional police officer Sriharsha Mishra.
