Bhubaneswar, June 29: Retired army doctor Somnath Parida, who allegedly murdered his wife and chopped her body into more than 100 pieces, today reiterated that she had committed suicide.

Parida, who underwent a lie-detection test at the State Forensic Science Laboratory, also shouted at the police personnel present when they did not allow him to interact with reporters.

Parida, who reached the laboratory around 11am for the polygraph test, had been there for around five hours. When he came out of the laboratory, the police prevented him from speaking to the reporters, which prompted Parida to allege that the cops were violating his fundamental rights.

However, Parida repeated that he loved his wife very much.

Police sources said that during the test, Parida was asked more than 50 questions to detect any contradiction in his earlier statements. He has been maintaining that he cut up the body of his wife, Ushashree, after she had committed suicide.

Sources in the laboratory said the septuagenarian doctor was remorseless and answered all questions in a straightforward manner. He did not even fumble and stuck to his earlier replies.

“But, we are analysing his statements and hope to get something positive. We will send our replies to the police,” said a laboratory official.

The city police had yesterday got the court approval to conduct the lie-detector test on Parida. Following the test, Parida was sent to Jharpada jail after a health check-up as his remand period was over.

The police had brought him in a three-day remand on June 27.

Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police Nitinjeet Singh said further course of action would be decided after the results of the polygraph test were available.

“We have collected strong evidences against the doctor, and if necessary, we will again take him in remand,” said Singh.
