Bhubaneswar, June 14: The Indian Institute of Technology here will host a counselling session to help aspirants make a correct and informed choice in their career.

The Open Day will be held on June 18 on the permanent campus of the institute at Argul, Jatni.

Applicants who have secured a rank in the JEE-Advanced this year and also students preparing for next year's JEE examination can take part in the Open Day.

"Many students and their family members have been coming to our institute to see the campus and know more about its functioning. They are also coming here to enquire about other IITs. So, we thought the initiative will benefit those who have a lot of queries, but were not getting a platform to raise their voice," said the director of the institute R. V. Raja Kumar.

During the event, students will be given the opportunity to explore various departments, see the facilities, and interact with the faculty members. Prospective students can take part in the seminar either in person or through online mode via Skype or Internet telephone.

The counselling session will commence at 9.15am with a discussion on the IIT education system, the programmes of study, the admission process and the campus life at IIT Bhubaneswar.

This will be followed by a question and answer session. Special counselling has also been planned for prospective women candidates by the women helpdesk team of the institute. The institute also plant to set up the "Online IIT-Pal" centres by next year to provide JEE coaching to aspirants free of cost.

"It will provide course materials and also offer tutorials and fortnightly tests. For this purpose, the Union human resource development ministry is preparing the best course materials from competent teachers," said Raja Kumar.

The institute is also focusing on increasing green cover and upgrading infrastructure on the campus. Two hostels of 800 seats, each for men and women, are being constructed. The Union human resource development ministry has sanctioned Rs 1,180 crore for infrastructure development of the institute.
