Bhubaneswar: State police have decided to unearth the crime network of gangster Syed Usman Ali alias Tito, who was injured in an encounter on Saturday and subsequently arrested.

While the police have arrested six associates of the gangster, it is trying to arrest some more of his henchmen. Tito has a long history of crimes.

The police said that Tito and his associates had started extortion and tender fixing syndicates after gangster siblings Sushant and Sushil Dhal Samanta were arrested in January 2016 for a string of crimes, including murder and extortion.

The police have formed special teams to nab Tito's aides, who have gone underground after the encounter. The police said Tito was involved in almost 40 criminal cases including murder and attempt to murder in Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur.

"Tito and his gang members faced serious resistance from Dhal Samanta brothers in the past. However, once the police started arresting the aides of Dhal Samanta, gang members of Tito tried to make their presence felt," said a cop.

The police said that Tito had allegedly invested money in transport, stevedoring and hospitality sectors.

"We will also probe his alleged crime network in other states. We will also investigate the mode of investment of money of the gangster. Besides, we will ascertain the source of procurement of arms by the gang members," said a cop.

The police have urged victims of extortion and other crimes to lodge complaints against Tito.

"We urge the victims to lodge complaints for the sake of thorough probe," said a cop.
