Cuttack, Sept. 22: The revenue divisional commissioner, central division, probing into the alleged police excesses on anti-liquor agitators at Namtara in Kendrapara district, will submit its report by the end of October.

The commissioner, A.B. Ota, said the report will be submitted to the state government by October-end as the process of recording statements was completed today with the deposition of the then police superintendent of Kendrapara, Satish Gajbhiye.

Altogether 50 depositions were recorded as part of the inquiry, the focus of which is to ascertain whether the law-enforcing agencies had perpetrated excesses during the people's movement against illicit liquor, Ota told the media.

Nine persons, including women and children, had suffered serious injuries when cops allegedly resorted to firing on unarmed activists at Namtara village in Rajkanika block on March 12, triggering a state-wide public outcry.

The government ordered an inquiry by the revenue divisional commissioner into the police firing four days later.

The government expected the high-level administrative inquiry to look into allegations that the administration had declared the gathering of anti-liquor activists as unlawful, though they obtained prior permission for a rally against growing alcoholism in the rural areas of Kendrapara district.
