Bhubaneswar, July 20: It’s boom time for the country’s hospitality and tourism industry. With a surge in popularity of the sector, more star hotels and restaurants are coming up, which in turn, offer lucrative openings for professionals. As a result, these days many youngsters are taking up both short as well as long-term courses in these fields.

• Post-graduate diploma in accommodation operation and management: 30 seats (18 months). Minimum qualification: Graduate in any discipline or equivalent. Fees: Rs 18,000
• Craft certificate courses in Food production: 40 seats (18 months). Minimum qualification: matriculation. Fees: Rs 23,600

SHM

• Diploma in food production: 30 seats (18 months). Minimum qualification: Matriculation. Fees: Rs 19,500
• Diploma in food and beverages service: 40 seats (18 months). Minimum qualification: Matriculation. Fees: Rs 13,500
• Diploma in front office operation: 40 seats (18 months). Minimum qualification: Matriculation. Fees: Rs 13,500

Scope
According to Arya Kumari Panigrahi, principal of Institute of Hotel Management, Bhubaneswar, hospitality sector will continue to remain the top recruiter in the next two decades.
“Candidates who are genuinely interested in this sector can prosper. Sky is the limit as chances of going abroad are very much possible,” she added. After completion of the course, aspirants can work in hotels, restaurants, aviation, shipping among other sectors.
They can also set up their own restaurant business.
Seniors say
Koushik Jha, a former student of IHM, Bhubaneswar, who used to work in London as supervisor of food and beverage of a hotel, said demand for professionals in this sector would rise, as the aviation sector along with tourism will expand in coming years. “The high growth in economy has added an extra dimension to the hotel and hospitality sector as people are not reluctant to spend money on food and hospitality,” he said. His advice to aspirants: “Patience is key to success. In case a customer misbehaves with you, you have to be patient and polite enough to deal with him/her.”
