Sambalpur, Dec. 30: At least 30 high-powered closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed at the main stretch of the Hirakud dam by March 2017 to increase security around the site.
Hirakud Dam Project chief engineer Harmohan Pradhan said today: "The government has decided to install surveillance cameras at the main stretch of the dam and at Gandhi Minar and Nehru Minar, two towers situated on the dam. The procurement of the cameras will begin shortly, and they will be installed by March next year."
"It was estimated from the preliminary assessment that 30 CCTV cameras would be required for the main stretch of the dam. However, we will consult with the district superintendent of police over the issue," Pradhan said.
The length of the dam's main stretch is 4.8km, while the total length of the dam, including the main one, is around 25.8km.
An official said: "The Bargarh and Sambalpur district police had sent a proposal to the home department to beef-up security at the dam site. The home and water resource departments recommended steps for it. The decision to install the CCTV cameras was a part of the recommendations."
Pradhan said the state police personnel deployed for the dam's security would be replaced by the Odisha Industrial Security Force officials by March 2017. At present, around 31 personnel of Odisha police are deployed at the dam site.
"The Hirakud dam was inaugurated in 1957. It is one of the longest earthen dams in the world. It is an asset for the state. Moreover, it is one of the major tourist attractions of this region. Considering the importance of the place, adequate security measures should be taken," said Santosh Biswal, a visitor.
