Cuttack, Aug. 23: A CBI probe has been ordered into the alleged custody death of a 27-year-old man at Saheed Nagar police station in June 2012.

A single judge bench of Justice A.K. Rath on August 18 ordered a CBI probe on a petition filed by Rabindra Nath Mohapatra, who alleged that his son Kuldeep Mohapatra had died in police custody.

The petitioner has alleged that officials of Saheed Nagar police station picked up Kuldeep on June 5, 2012. Orissa High Court has asked the superintendent of police (CBI), Bhubaneswar, to submit a report on his death within four weeks.

Kuldeep’s father alleged that his son was subjected to physical torture at Saheed Nagar police station that led to his death. Earlier, Saheed Nagar police arrested Kuldeep on June 5 for allegedly extorting money from a person by posing as a policeman.

Later, he was declared dead at Capital hospital after the police had sent him there for a medical check-up. Though the police claimed that a mob had beaten up Kuldeep, the family members alleged that the cops had tortured him in the custody — which led to his death. Following the incident, the police had suspended two assistant sub-inspectors of Saheed Nagar police station and announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
