Bhubaneswar, Aug. 17: Thirty-three seats are still vacant at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, after counselling ended here on August 10.

Only 17 students turned up for document verification and deposited admission fees.

“These include eight general category candidates, seven OBCs and two SC candidates,” said admissions in charge at AIIMS , A.K. Jena.

A Supreme Court order that came earlier this week has resulted in reallocation of centres to students who had appeared for the entrance. The apex court had said that reserved category students who got selected on open merit would be admitted against unreserved seats. But, at the time of allocation of institutes, they would be considered in the “reserved category”, said an official.

“This implies that reserved category students will now have a better chance to get into their institute of choice,” he said.

As a result, four students from Bhubaneswar will be reallocated seats in AIIMS, Bhopal, and four students from AIIMS, Raipur, will find seats at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

The last date of admission for reallocated students has been extended to August 20. Students from ranks 40 to 203 had opted for AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, and there were eight students from Odisha in the list of 50. However, few chose to join. The first batch will find accommodation on campus. “Students will stay in the residential quarters until the hostels are ready. There is sufficient space for 50 students and they can be housed on campus,” Jena said.

The authorities had earlier decided to house these students temporarily in private apartments near the upcoming institute.

So far, only nine of the total 24 faculty members have joined. These include faculty in anatomy, biochemistry and physiology.
