Gun factory
Koraput: Border Security Force jawans deployed in the district busted a gun manufacturing unit being run by Maoists during a combing operation in the Turukpadu-Motawalesa reserve forest area near Siribeda village. Police suspect there are more illegal gun making-units operational in the district.
Heat on rebels
Bhubaneswar: State police andcentral paramilitary forces willintensify anti-Maoist operations in districts bordering Chhatisgarh in western and southern Odisha. Sources said that operations were being stepped up as there was a possibility of rebels crossing over to the state from neighbouring states.
Fake notes
Bhubaneswar: Police will apply for five-day remand of Mohammad Rubel, an accused in the fake currency racket. Rubel was arrested on Saturday with 16 fake 1000-rupee notes. He had gone to a mobile shop in Bomikhal with the fake notes to buy a mobile phone. The shopkeeper suspected the notes and informed Saheed Nagar police.
Bandh hits life
Sambalpur: Normal life was paralysed in Deogarh district on Monday due to a dawn-to-dusk bandh observed by Congress over the demand to declare Deogarh district drought-hit. Educational institution, banks, shops and business establishments as well as state and central government offices remained closed. Movement of vehicles was also affected.
Student dead
Balasore: A student of a engineering college died after being hit by a train near Soro railway station on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Sanjay Mallick, 22, of Basudevpur, was hit by a train while he was crossing railway tracks. pankh under Sadar police station.
Infant dead
Bhubaneswar: Body of a newborn male child was found near Bhimpur in the city on Tuesday. Police recovered the abandoned body and conducted a post-mortem at the Capital Hospital. This is the third such incident in the past 15 days.
Accused flees
Sambalpur: An accused, who was arrested by Hirakud police on Monday night, fled from the Hirakud police station on Tuesday. The accused, Upendra Mukhi,was arrested for looting cash from a person.
Fire mishap
Bhubaneswar: Five persons were critically injured after a gas cylinder burst at Athgarh in Cuttack. The injured are being treated at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Jailed
Bhubaneswar: The Balasore district judge on Monday awarded life imprisonment to a 60-year-old for hacking a woman to death at a village in the district two years ago. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 2,000 on the accused, Parikhita Dalei. Parikhita, a native of Gobindapur village, had killed Santana Dalei, 62, of the same village following an altercation over a minor issue on June 28, 2010.

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Sahitya Academy is going to celebrate the birth centenary of Binode Kanungo, compiler of Jnan Mandal, a famous Odia encyclopedia. The celebration will commence from Wednesday at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya.
