Kendrapara: A minor boy has been taken into custody for abetting to the suicide of an 18-year-old girl by mentally torturing her by posting her morphed obscene pictures on social media and making it viral.

The accused, a Plus Two student, was apprehended from Kanshbahal area following electronic tracking of his mobile phone.

His offensive postings had left the victim traumatised. Unable to withstand the harassment, the victim had ended her life on January 9 by jumping into the Kharasrota river from a bridge.

The decomposed and bloated body of the deceased was retrieved from the Kharasrota riverbed near Ekamania village in Pattamundai police station limits on January 14.

The accused was infatuated and obsessed with the victim girl who was incidentally older to him. It was one-sided affair.

The accused was annoyed after the victim had rejected his romantic advances.

The victim had also left behind a suicide note, said inspector of Pattamundai police station Pramod Kumar Mallick.

The accused was booked under Indian Penal Code's Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 6 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The accused, being a minor, was later forwarded to the Juvenile Justice Board.

At least seven such cyber crimes had been reported in Kendrapara district in past six months. All the offences were related to the misuse of social media and offensive postings on Facebook and WhatsApp. Offensive and obscene pictures were posted on the site that had led the victims to lodge police complaints. All the accused persons were arrested later following the complaints lodged in the past.

Many people capture still images or video of various moments by mobile phones and make it viral on social media to grab attention.

The police are trying their best to deal with these cases as such offences are tarnishing image of victims infringing upon their privacy.
