Bhubaneswar, Jan. 3: Police today recovered the body of an infant boy from a dustbin in front of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Hospital.

Although, the exact cause of death is yet to be ascertained, the police are suspecting that that the two-day-old male child might have been dumped by his parents into the dustbin leading to its death.

The incident came into light after a sweeper of the hospital saw the body lying inside the dustbin.

“The body was not covered and was inside the dustbin. Later, we informed the hospital authorities,” said Sasank Sahoo, who owns a betel shop near the hospital.

The umbilical cord and placenta were still attached to the body. The hospital authorities have started an investigation to find out whether the delivery took place in their hospital. “We are going through the delivery records of the last three days. While many of the women had left the hospital after delivery, a few of them are also being admitted and undergoing treatment. So we have started an inquiry to find out whether the baby was delivered in our hospital,” said chief municipal medical officer N.K. Sahu.

Hospital officials said that around 30 deliveries had taken place during past three days.

The police later seized the body and sent it for a postmortem. “We have started an investigation into the matter and are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said a police officer of Lingaraj police station.
