Cuttack, Aug. 23: Tension gripped Jatiya Kabi Birakishore (JKBK) College when unidentified persons triggered an explosion near the main entrance of the college around noon today. No one was hurt in the incident.

Though the exact reason behind the explosion is unclear, it is suspected it could be to terrorise students of a particular group ahead of the students’ union election, the dates of which were yet to be announced.

“We were inside the classroom when we heard a loud noise. We rushed out of the campus and found someone had lobbed a bomb in front of our campus,” said Deepak Biswal, a Plus Three second year student.

Biswal said it was still unclear who the target of the goons was but he thought the incident has nothing to do with college as there has been no violence or tension amongst students.

However, police said it could just have been a cracker. Local residents said unidentified persons hurled the low-intensity bomb or cracker from OMP Square bridge.

“There was a loud noise and smoke all over the place after the explosion near the JKBK campus,” said a shopkeeper who wished to remain anonymous.

Police said it was not really a bomb but just a cracker because they found no traces of materials that could confirm it as a crude bomb.

“Though no one has been injured in the incident, we are investigating the matter,” a police official said.
