Golaghat, Oct. 18: People in Golaghat district of Assam have constituted Dr Bhogeswar Dutta Memorial Homoeo Science Committee to donate the land of Assam Homoeo Research School of Medicine to any government organisation that wishes to start any activity related to homoeopathy.

The Assam Homoeo Research School of Medicine was opened at Chinatolly around 15km from here on January 16, 1947.

The institute, the first of its kind in that time, was the result of the ingenious effort of Dr Bhogeswar Dutta, the pioneer in spreading the homoeopathic system of medicine among the populace in the region.

He established the first homoeopathic hospital with 12 beds, which was inaugurated by the then state health minister Rupram Brahma on December 15, 1955.

Dutta’s obsession for the growth of homoeopathy in those early days of Independence did not bear much fruit because of lack of consciousness regarding homoeopathic treatment among the government and people. Lack of patronage ultimately led to the closure of the institute and the hospital with the death of Dutta in 1973.

All that remains now is a barren dilapidated small construction. A group of people has constituted Dr Bhogeswar Dutta Memorial Homoeo Science Committee to revive things and have made a proposal of donating the existing land to any government organisation to start activity for the sake of homoeopathy.

Ranjit Kumar Dutta, secretary of the memorial committee and Dr Bhogeswar Dutta’s son, told The Telegraph that the institute was a torchbearer in the field of homeopathy in the entire Northeast.

“It is a great heritage of the state because 1,900 registered medical practitioners have passed out from the institute and I appeal to the authorities to make an earnest effort to restore the institute,” Ranjit Dutta said.

He said recently Bhubaneswar Kalita, chairman of House committee of the Rajya Sabha, has forwarded their proposal to Union minister for health and family welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad to re-establish the institute.
