Aizawl, Jan. 25: In a bid to revive the flagging Mizoram People?s Conference (MPC), Brig. T. Sailo, founder of the party who had resigned from politics in 2003, agreed to become an active member of the party and lead it again.

An 80-member panel in the MPC has agreed to hold elections to the president?s post at the general party assembly next month, where the former chief minister will contest.

The MPC, a human rights organisation that turned into a political party in 1973, had been at the helm of the Mizoram government during the late Seventies and early Eighties, championing people?s rights during army operations in the state.

With time, the party lost its sway in the government. The present Assembly has only two members belonging to the MCP.

The party high command, including the president, Lalhmingthanga, had proposed a merger with the ruling Mizo National Front, but the party members did not agree.

Following this, Lalhmingthanga submitted his resignation from the post this month.

Realising that the party workers and supporters had lost faith in the party leadership, the MCP high command approached Brig. Sailo to take up the party reins.

MPC vice-president J.V. Hluna, when contacted today, confirmed Brig. Sailo?s decision.
