Hike in DA for state employees

• GUWAHATI: Dispur has enhanced the dearness allowance (DA) of state government employees and pensioners at the rate of 1 per cent with effect from July 1. The existing rate of DA per mensem is 5 per cent of the basic pay/pension. The arrear DA, with effect from July 1 to October 31, will be paid in a single installment through bank accounts of the employees and pensioners.

Police reshuffle

• GUWAHATI: Additional director-general of police (vigilance and anti-corruption) Y.K. Gautam has been transferred and posted as ADGP (special task force). ADGP (special task force) K.V. Singh Deo takes over as the new BIEO chief . Deo will also hold additional charge of ADGP, chief minister's special vigilance cell . IGP (special branch) Anurag Tankha has been posted as IGP (vigilance and anti-corruption). ADGP (communication) R. Chandranathan has been transferred and posted as the ADGP (railways). He replaces S.N. Singh, who has been made ADGP (communication).

Mebo circle office

• GUWAHATI: Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on Friday inaugurated the much-awaited circle office building at Namsing, under Mebo subdivision in East Siang district, in the presence of state BJP president Tapir Gao. He also laid the foundation stone of Don Bosco School, Mebo, released a book penned by Father Francis and participated in a plantation programme.

Financial aid

AIZAWL: Financial assistance under the New Land Use Policy (NLUP) was given to its beneficiaries at Lunglei and Lawngtlai villages in Mizoram on Friday. Most of the funds was distributed under the piggery and poultry trade. The NLUP is a flagship programme of the state government for development of farmers.

Truck driver held

• SILCHAR: POLICE APPREHENDED TRUCK DRIVER GHULAM SABBIR KHAN, A RESIDENT OF WEST BENGAL, FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING AND SELLING IRON RODS VALUED AT RS 6 LAKH AT HATIKHIRA IN ASSAM'S KARIMGANJ DISTRICT, ON THURSDAY. KHAN WAS SUPPOSED TO DELIVER THE RODS IN MANIPUR.

Annual fair

silchar: Baram Baba Mela, a three-day popular annual fair, started at Silcoorie in Assam's Cachar district on Friday.

Plea to end gambling menace

• DHUBRI: The Gauripur Anchalik Committee of the All Kamtapur Students' Organisation staged a demonstration in Gauripur town for three hours on Friday, demanding action against illegal activities like gambling which are rampant in and around the district. The students' organisation submitted a memorandum to the Dhubri deputy commissioner, urging him to take action.

Financial aid

DIBRUGARH: The Assam State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank Employees' Union on Friday said the state government will soon provide financial assistance of Rs 906.56 lakh to the bank for its revival.

Prize distribution

• DHUBRI: Rasraj Jatiya Vidyalaya, Dhubri, will hold its annual prize distribution and a day-long programme on the school premises on Sunday, the death anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika.

Body found

• DHUBRI: The body of an unidentified person, aged about 50 years, was recovered from Golakganj railway station on Friday. The cause of the death is yet to be ascertained, police said.

Vigilance week

• GUWAHATI: The Assam oil division of the Indian Oil Corporation organised street plays here as a part of vigilance awareness week.

Students protest

• DOOMDOOMA: The Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti staged a protest in front of Sadiya subdivisional office on Thursday, demanding lights on Dhola-Sadiya bridge, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Celebration

• DOOMDOOMA: The birth centenary of late Radha Krishna Khemka, a two time legislator from here, will be celebrated at Tinsukia Manava Kalyan building on November 12.

• DIBRUGARH: The Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) celebrated its 71st foundation day on Friday. AMCH principal hoisted the institution flag.

Woman falls off train, dies

• TINSUKIA: A 35-year-old woman, identified as Lakhi Chowdhury, died after she fell off a local train while trying to board it at New Tinsukia railway station on Friday.

Probe demand

• DOOMDOOMA: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has demanded a probe into the smuggling of acacia catechu tree, whose logs are illegally sold at Rs 100 per kg.

• DOOMDOOMA: Betani Yuva Sangha will celebrate Children's Day at Betani Gaon playground near Makum on November 13 and 14.

School games

• AIZAWL: Aizawl district stood first winning 16 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals in the 35th Mizoram Secondary School Games, which concluded here on Friday.

Murder arrest

JORHAT: Jorhat police arrested two drivers, Pranjal Das, 30 and Shantanu Saikia, 35, from Kahilipara in Guwahati on Thursday night in connection with the murder of another driver, Rajib Gogoi, at Nowboicha under Bhogdoi police outpost on October 10.

Double crowns

GUWAHATI: Ishika Chakma of Assam won double crowns in the AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament in Lucknow on Friday. She won the girls' under-16 title, beating Sambhabi Tewari of Uttar Pradesh 2-6, 6-2, 6-7, and the under-18 crown, beating Shakshi Mishra of Chhattisgarh 6-4, 6-0. Kritanta Sarma of Assam and Sanjith Devineni of Karnataka beat Bisht Vaibhav of Uttar Pradesh and Rautfaa Nikhil of Delhi 6-4, 6-3 for the U-18 doubles title.

Sports meet

GUWAHATI: The 48th Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan National Sports Meet got under way at Tepesia sports complex here on Wednesday.
