Guwahati, May 19: Upset over rampant building violations in the city, chief minister Tarun Gogoi today asked authorities to take “corrective” action to ensure sustainable development.
Officials accompanying Tarun Gogoi on a whirlwind tour of the city said the chief minister has asked agencies dealing with development and maintenance of the city to take action against erring builders wherever building bylaws have been violated.
“We will have to stop illegal construction else there will be haphazard development, which will lead to more problems for the residents. We want development but it should not be such that it leads to more problems like landslides, fire tenders unable to reach the affected places and animals moving to urban areas. Rules will have to be re-examined wherever necessary so that violations do not recur,” Gogoi said.
Top officials of Guwahati development department, GMDA and other departments and agencies accompanied Gogoi, including GMDA chairman and East Guwahati MLA Robin Bordoloi.
The Telegraph had reported today on the chief minister’s visit to various areas in the city to take stock of the ground situation after mounting complaints of violations and indifference towards improving the quality of life.
The GMC, the GMDA and the district administration have been cracking the whip of late but more needs to be done, sources said.
At Udalbakra, Gogoi inquired about the construction of a 10-storey apartment and asked the GMDA to re-examine the permission issued in 2007 to prevent any disaster in the future.
He has also directed a fresh environment impact assessment. “We will have to look into the soil conditions of the place. If we do not examine it, there will be landslides in the future,” Gogoi said.
He said GPS could be used to monitor developments in places where there were reports of violations.
Deputy commissioner of Kamrup (metro) Ashutosh Agnihotri said the chief minister visited the old official bungalow of the deputy commissioner along the Brahmaputra riverfront and asked the GMDA to prepare a project to convert the bungalow into a handicraft museum.
Visiting Central Jail Guwahati at Fancy Bazar, Gogoi said the government had decided to convert the vacant jail plot into a park with underground parking space for people’s convenience.
He also visited Borsola Beel and Sarusola Beel. He asked the Kamrup (metro) administration to clear all eviction in and around the two waterbodies and convert the beels into tourist spots.
