Dhemaji: In order to bring quality and free healthcare to the people of Majuli, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday inaugurated the free CT scan service at Pitambar Devgoswami civil hospital, Garamur.

Under the "CM's free diagnostic services scheme", Sonowal dedicated a Rs 2-crore sophisticated CT scan machine to the public at a function organised at the hospital on Wednesday.

Under the scheme, free X-ray and laboratory services are already available in Majuli, which was lagging far behind in healthcare, because of which the people were forced to depend on Jorhat and Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.

Majuli recently received a huge influx of central and state government funds for protection from floods and erosion, along with an Ayurvedic hospital whose foundation stone was laid by Sonowal and Union minister Nitin Gadkari. Various initiatives have been undertaken by the state government to improve health services in the district. Sonowal had declared recently that Majuli subdivisional civil hospital will be upgraded to a district hospital at the cost of Rs 21 crore and a blood bank set up at the cost of Rs 5 crore.

Sonowal ceremoniously laid the foundation of the Heritage Swadesh Darshan Project at a function held at Majuli College Field, Doriapar. The project is part of the Rs 77-crore tourism infrastructure development initiative undertaken by Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) in the district.
