Silchar, Jan. 24: The BSF has sealed the 132-km land and river border with Bangladesh in Assam’s Karimganj and Cachar districts.

These two districts, along with Hailakandi, have been put on high alert to prevent any terrorist attack in the run up to Republic Day celebrations.

The decision was taken after Guwahati police arrested two suspected Multa terrorists for having links with the ISI. Both are suspected to be involved in the recent blasts in Guwahati.

South Assam depu-ty inspector general of police Y.K. Gautam toured the troublespots in Karimganj district yesterday while district deputy commissioner Anurag Goel visited Phulbarifor an on-the-spot inspection of security arrangements.

In Cachar, intelligence agencies are keeping tabs on the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) — the two Manipuri insurgent groups that have cells scattered in the Lakhipur subdivision of the district.

Sources in the subdivisional headquarters at Lakhipur, however, said there were no indications that either of these outfits would engineer any trouble in the next two days.

It is believed that the outfits are not too keen to disturb their bases in Lakhipur, mainly used for collecting funds and for recruiting new members.

Police in these three south Assam districts have been instructed to keep an eye on vehicles and bikes parked in congested localities, as they maybe used to plant bombs.

Two persons were arrested on Monday night near the Indian Oil Corporation’s cooking gas-bottling plant at Hironchera under Borkhola block in Cachar district.

The police recovered 23 high-calibre detonator pieces and 11-metre-long fuse wire from the duo, identified as Farij Uddin (25), and Imam Uddin Borbhuyan (20), both from Barjatrapur village.

State and central government sleuths are interrogating the duo. Local people had tipped off the police after they found the youths moving about in a suspicious manner in the area.
