April 5: The B. Borooah College Students Union (BBCSU) today appealed to the public to avoid donating money to organisations that were collecting funds to rebuild the fire-ravaged college.
The students? union said sundry organisations were trying to ?fraudulently collect money in the name of rebuilding the college?. It feared that the money might not actually land in the college coffers.
The government and several philanthropic organisations had come forward to help rebuild the 62-year-old college that was gutted in a devastating fire on March 3 even as there was a huge emotional outpouring from the general public.
The general secretary and vice-president of the students? union, Nilotpal Kakati and Imdad Hussain, told the media that no unscrupulous elements would be allowed to take advantage of the situation.
?We appeal to all our well-wishers to donate money through cheque to the B. Borooah College account in the Chenikuthi branch of the State Bank of India. Apart from donating money through the SBI account, people should not pay to anyone else,? Hussain said.
The students? union submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, governor Lt Gen. (retd) Ajai Singh and chief minister Tarun Gogoi requesting a high-level inquiry, preferably by the CBI, into the inferno and punish the culprits. ?Since the magisterial inquiry has hinted at sabotage, the government should conduct a high-level probe,? Kakati said.
