Guwahati, May 16: Assam boxer Pranamika Bora won her first international medal when she claimed a bronze yesterday in an invitational boxing championship in Turkey.

Bora went down to a Turkish boxer in the semi-finals of the 54kg category.

The tournament, which began on May 13, will conclude tomorrow.

Pranamika’s compatriot Kalpana Choudhury had to be content with a quarterfinal-round exit.

Kalpana from Ledo in Tinsukia district and Pranamika of Jorhat are trainees at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre here.

The duo left for Turkey, along with SAI coach Oinam Geeta Devi, after their training camp at Chilaro in Himachal Pradesh on Monday.

Apart from Pranamika, a pugilist from Kerala has made it to the final of the championship in Turkey.

Pranamika was adjudged best boxer in the last national women’s boxing championship in Kokrajhar for winning the 54kg final against L. Sarita Devi of Manipur.

The young boxer has now set her eyes on the Olympics in the near future.

Punjab National Games gold medallist Kalpana was named the most promising boxer in the Kokrajhar nationals.

The Assam government has announced rewards of Rs 20,000 to both boxers for their outstanding performance in the ring during the national championship.
