Fifteen-year-old Sharif Khan clinched the title at Tata Steel IGU East Zone Sub-Junior Tour, which was played over the last two days at Beldih Golf Club.
The Jamshedpur teenager registered a 12-shot win over runner-up Yashvardan Sharda to clinch the top honours in the first leg of the 2013 season. While Khan took 164 shots to emerge victorious, Sharda needed 12 shots more and finished a distant second.
Zahed Khan and Aman Singhal jointly occupied the third position.
Results of category B remained largely unaltered with Khan and Sharda occupying the winner and runner-up position respectively. Kushay Kejriwal, who had bagged the fifth spot in category A, finished third with 184 shots.
Sharif Khan parred the first four holes but lost three shots on the par-4 fifth and a bogey on the par-3 eighth before taking the turn at 4-over.
A bogey on the 12th was followed by a double on the 13th. However, he jumped back with two birdies in the next three holes. With a bogey-birdie finish, Khan won the title comfortably.
“I am thrilled to have won the first event of the season,” Khan said at the end of the round. “I stuck to my game plan of trying to avoid mistakes and it paid off well,” he added.
In category C, Sandeep Yadav emerged on top with a two-round total of 166 with Bibek Sardar finishing second at 170. Manish Rajak occupied the third position at 171. Rajib Ali bagged the honours in Category D with a total of 167 while Aroush Tagore and Arav Shanghavi finished second and third respectively.
Rashik Basu clinched the title in the Category E (boys and girls) while Vanika Badshah and Marshneil Prasad won in the Girls B and C categories respectively.
Sanjay Sabherwal, executive member of Jamshedpur Golf Committee, handed over the prizes to the winners.
Notably, 20 golfers will be selected from each of the four zones to compete at a national-level, the schedule for which has not yet been finalised.
