Rabindrasangeet, Bollywood, pop, folk tunes, Indian classical music, ghazal, Broadway-style musicals — pianist Sourendro Mullick and vocalist Soumyojit Das have cut across genres and carved for themselves a loyal audience. To mark a decade in music, the duo will present the concert, Just 10, with t2, at Swabhumi today. “We will be launching an album called Just 10, and also our own music label, on December 23,” they said. Sourendro and Soumyojit tune into six defining memories from their 10-year-old musical journey...

  • What: Just 10, with t2
  • Where: Swabhumi, Urban Courtyard
  • When: December 23, 6.30pm
  • Tickets: Available at bookmyshow.com. Call 9051433141 for details

Birthday surprise: The date was September 21, 2014, and Sharmila Tagore, who does music-and-poetry concerts with the duo, sprung a surprise on Soumyojit. A day before one such concert, the actress came over to the Music Room in the Marble Palace for rehearsals. “She got to know that it was my birthday and she organised a cake. And while cutting the cake she said, ‘See, you are so lucky, it’s also my daughter-in-law’s (Kareena) birthday today. And I am cutting a cake with you,’” recalled Soumyojit.

Meeting Pele: The call for the gig at NSHM came out of the blue a day before, and they got to know that Pele would be in the audience. “We did a south Indian rhythm-heavy piece, which was like background music for a football match. We ended the piece by saying, ‘Namaste Pele’, and he took up the microphone and said, ‘Namaste to you’. Later we met him, and when he kept his hand on my shoulder, I was over the moon. Then he sang a couple of lines, and said, ‘Your song reminded me of Samba music’,” said Soumyojit.

Receiving a congratulatory email from Gulzar: On Tagore and We 3, S+S did a piece that combined Rabindrasangeet and Sufi music. Then they made a video and released it on YouTube. Then, one day an email popped up around 10pm. “It was from Gulzar. I don’t know how and from where he got our email id. It just said, ‘Just superb, Tagore is a real Sufi and rightly interpreted Sourendro & Soumyojit. Gulzar.’ This was a very emotional moment for us,” said Sourendro.

The launch of Dekha Hobe Ei Banglay: A five-minute anthemic music video that flips through the rich past and present of Bengal, featuring 103 artistes including Prosenjit, Sharmila Tagore and Sourav Ganguly.

Lovingly yours Rinadi: The duo have been collaborating with the filmmaker since 2012 for Lovingly Yours, a show based on love letters written by legends. “Aparna Sen, sitting next to you, in our Music Room... rehearsing with you, giving her comments... was a different experience. We have travelled with this production to the US, Hyderabad, Jaipur. Through the travels, we got to know her more, and she became Rinadi to us,” said Sourendro.

Diet mentor Sunidhi Chauhan: After the recordings for Tagore and We 2 featuring Sunidhi Chauhan were done, the Bollywood singer invited the duo to her home in Mumbai. “She had become my diet mentor for some time because I wanted to lose weight for a video shoot! But on that day she offered me mangoes,” said Soumyojit.
