The trailer of Ayushmann Khurrana’s Badhaai Ho released on Tuesday and the film looks right up the actor’s alley. Ayushmann, known as the king of quirk, has had a real nice time playing a man whose mother gets pregnant when he is dating someone. And so has the rest of the cast.
Ayushmann, who keeps on getting offers for films like Vicky Donor, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and his latest film, said: “There are subjects that are out there but not many of us think of turning them into films. It is nice for me and I want to do one such film every year. Where do we hear stories of a woman getting married at the age of 50 years? Though I have had heard of something similar in my close relative’s case.”
Ayushmann has been instrumental in getting Gajraj Rao cast as his onscreen father in Badhaai Ho. He said: “We needed a face so innocent that no one would think that he has sex and Gajraj Rao was the person. Neenaji, I was sceptical because her image was of choli ke peeche, so innocence kaise aayega? But she has done a superb job.”
Neena Gupta is happy playing the mother. The actress said: “Such incidents of a woman getting pregnant at an older age does happen in smaller towns. But for me to get a role like this was simply great because where do actors of my age get a chance to do such pivotal roles. This was a very good and challenging role for me.
“When I dubbed for a few scenes everything in it looked so real. Not one thing looked out of place or unreal. Badhaai Ho is a complete family film — there is no hero or heroine in this film,” she added.
Dangal girl Sanya Malhotra plays the role of an urban girl in the film and she said: “Though I had signed Badhaai Ho before Pataakha, that is releasing first. But to tell you about this film, I heard the script and immediately said yes, as I wanted to be a part of it.”
Unlike Ayushmann, Sanya had not heard of any case where a mother gets pregnant while her son is of dating age. She said: “The film is full of fun and there is an undercurrent of emotion. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of it.”
Having worked with Aparshakti Khurrana in her debut film, on the differences among the brothers, Sanya said: “Apar is an extrovert while Ayushmann is little of an introvert but the similarities is unke PJs ek tarah ke hote hain.”
