Rani Mukerji plays a Bengali woman from Kolkata on a warpath against the Norwegian foster care system to regain custody of her children in the trailer of Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, dropped by Zee Studios on Thursday.

This drama, directed by Ashima Chibber, marks Rani’s return to the big screen after 2021’s Bunty Aur Babli 2. Inspired by true events, the film follows Rani’s Debika Chatterjee as her happy married life in a foreign nation turns upside-down when the foster care system there takes away her children.

The trailer begins with snippets of a happy couple — Debika (Rani) and her husband (Anirban Bhattacharya) — who begin a new life in Norway. Debika’s world revolves around her children and husband. However, her brief period of happiness soon comes to an end when her children are taken away. The Chatterjees are told they are not taking adequate care of the kids.

The main complaint against Debika is partly based on a prejudiced approach against Indian customs, the trailer shows. The Norwegian authorities take objection to Debika feeding her kids by hand, sleeping with them in the same bed and putting tika on their forehead. Desperate to win custody of her kids, Debika battles it out in the courts. Her husband, who is more concerned about his citizenship status, refuses to stand by her side.

The trailer ends with a monologue by Rani in which she tells an Indian court that she does not know whether she is a good or a bad mother, but what matters is that she is a mother.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway was previously slated to hit the cinemas on March 3, but the release date was eventually postponed to March 17. This is Anirban Bhattacharya’s first Hindi project as an actor.
