Riding upon the successes of its latest web series Nikosh Chhaya and Talmar Romeo Juliet, Hoichoi has announced Kaalratri, another new series that will be streamed on the platform from December 6. The official trailer of Kaalratri revealed that the series will be a family crime drama, full of intrigue and suspense.

Its story revolves around a newlywed young bride called Debi (Soumitrisha Kundoo) who discovers that her husband Rudra (Indrasish Roy) has been murdered in his family mansion on her first night there. Married into a wealthy and noble family in a district town, Debi is shocked to discover the dark side of her in-laws’ lives even before tragedy strikes. Abusive relationships, illicit affairs and a general atmosphere of suspicion and conspiracy in the household fill her mind with horror and dread, which culminates in the discovery of the death of her just-wedded groom. What follows is an investigation of the chilling crime, with disturbing secrets held by the family spilling out one after another.

Each character in the story is painted as a suspect in the crime which is investigated by Satyaki Sanyal, a senior police officer, whose character has shades of humour in it. Soumitrisha’s portrayal of Debi is measured yet spontaneous. Her depiction as a grieving widow and a determined crusader out to find her husband’s murderer is equally convincing. The other characters, especially the mother-in-law (Rupanjana Mitra), father-in-law (Debesh Chattopadhyay), Debi’s friend Maya and the family’s maid servant come off as interesting characters.

With its story, screenplay, dialogues and direction by Ayan Chakraborti, Kaalratri, also starring Anujoy Chattopadhyay, Rajdeep Gupta, Sairity Banerjee, Sounak Roy, Sampurna Mondal, Diya Chakraborty, Koushani Mukherjee and Dipanwita Sarkar, combines the expanse of a family drama with the suspense of a murder mystery and promises to appeal to viewers when it hits the screen early next month.
