| They had locked lips in Riingo’s Kranti last autumn, as college buddies madly in love. They kiss again — more passionately — for the Bankim Chandra period piece Krishnakanter Will this autumn. Jeet and Swastika rewind a century and more to set the screen on fire as Gobindalal and Rohini in this love-outside-marriage tale directed by Raja Sen. The moment of grand passion burns bright when a grief-stricken Gobindalal enters widow Rohini’s room. His wife Bhromor (Monali Thakur), whom he loves dearly, has deserted him. Gobindalal comes to seek solace in Rohini’s arms. “There is a lot of love and pain between Gobindalal and Rohini.... There are quite a few bold scenes in the film but they blend with the story. We were completely into the characters while shooting. It didn’t register that we were doing an intimate sequence. We had done a workshop and on the sets it was very important for me to forget that I was Swastika Mukherjee.... I am bare-back because widows in those times didn’t wear blouses,” says Swastika. For Sen, recreating the period drama on celluloid was no less daunting. “I have been faithful to the novel; I haven’t taken any cinematic liberties. Krishnakanter Will is a story of relationship, between a widow and a married man. Though the novel is a classic, the story is contemporary. It will ring true for all ages,” says the director of Devipaksha. Krishnakanter Will releases in November. |
