Calcutta, April 16: Chinese mobile phone maker Gionee is eyeing a turnover of Rs 6,500 crore from its operations in India during this fiscal.

"We are expecting to grow more than double in this fiscal," said Arvind Rajnish Vohra, country CEO and managing director of Gionee India.

The company's turnover in India last year was about Rs 3,200 crore. Its global turnover stood at $3.5 billion.

Gionee entered India in March 2013 and has sold about 8 million handsets till date.

"We are planning to sell another 8 million by the end of this fiscal," Vohra said.

In India, Gionee has a 5 per cent market share, which it is looking to take to 8 per cent during this fiscal.

"Our presence is strong in tier-II and tier-III cities but we are quite weak in tier-I cities as customers here trust big brands only," Vohra said.

The Chinese company is investing heavily in brand-building worldwide. It plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore in the next six months, of which Rs 250 crore has been allotted for India.

The handset maker has tied up with Foxconn to assemble 50 per cent of its mobile phones in India at Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

"By October we plan to assemble fully in India," he said.
