Patna, Feb. 6: Aakash S.R.’s resolutions to bring down the infant mortality rate and promote the rights of indigenous people have won the 16-year-old international accolades.
Aakash, a Class XI student of Baldwin Academy, returned to the state capital yesterday after attending a five-day programme Model United Nations of Bucharest (MUNOB), 2012, which ended on February 3. He and the principal of Baldwin Academy, Rajiv Ranjan Sinha, were the only delegates from India, representing the Amnesty International.
Aakash, the son of IAS officer S.M. Raju and homemaker Sunita Raju, was also awarded the most ambitious delegate at the event in Romania.
“Delegates from over 40 countries took part in MUNOB. Almost all countries had a delegate in each of the five communities, which were formed,” Aakash, who was a part of the Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, told The Telegraph.
“The conference was organised for nine hours on all the five days. Only 53 out of 185 countries have met the standards of the Millennium Development Goal of the United Nations in connection with reducing the infant mortality rate by 2015,” Aakash said, adding that they won the votes by a large majority and their resolution to reduce infant mortality rate was passed.
On the second resolution on the rights of indigenous people, Aakash, who studied up to Class X at St Michael’s High School, said: “We discussed different ways to promote equality for indigenous people in different countries, focusing mainly on the African and South American nations. We requested the UN members to increase the funds for the same.”
The Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee got 100 per cent votes for the second resolution.
On the experience of attending his maiden international conference, Aakash said: “I learnt a lot about international relations between different countries and the impact of the UN on this world.”
He will be leaving for the USA to attend another conference, MIT Model United Nations Conference, on Tuesday.
Baldwin Academy principal, who is also the CBSE city co-ordinator, appreciated Aakash’s efforts. “He worked very hard for the event. He has made the state and the country proud,” Sinha said.
