Around 120 retired teachers and employees of National Institute of Technology (NIT) would launch an agitation from Monday demanding regularisation of pension according to the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.

The aggrieved teachers and employees superannuated before 2004 — the year Bihar College of Engineering (BCE), then affiliated to Patna University (PU), was upgraded to an NIT. They would stage a daylong dharna at the varsity’s main administrative block. The retired teachers and employees association’s convener, Santosh Kumar, said: “We have urged the state government on several occasions to revise the pension of retired teachers and employees according to the Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendations, but in vain.”

He said: “Forget revision, retired employees are not getting pension regularly. They have not received their annuity for the past six months.” Santosh added: “We requested the PU administration to take up our case, but nothing has been done so far.”

In sharp contrast, PU registrar Balram Tiwari said: “The science and technology department gives pension to retired employees of BCE. Based on the petition of NIT-Patna’s retired teachers and employees, we drew attention of the science and technology department towards the issue. The retired teachers and employees will get their pensions soon.”

Mohan Rajak, who retired as a clerk from BCE in 2004, said: “I get pension under the Fifth Pay Commission’s recommendations, which is far less compared to the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.”
