Patna: The Bihar human rights commission (BHRC) has directed the state government to pay Rs 60,000 as compensation to a victim of police excess in Patna.
Hearing the petition filed by Patna resident Bulbul Devi, acting chairperson of the commission Justice Mandhata Singh ordered the state government to pay Rs 60,000 as compensation to the petitioner for police excesses against her husband Shailendra Kumar Lal.
Lal was allegedly detained by Pirbahore police station in Patna on the night of January 7, 2016, and was released the next day. Lal's repeated pleas that he had been granted bail from the court of the first class judicial magistrate, Patna, Shefali Narayan, in a case lodged against him fell on deaf ears.
According to the petition, Lal was granted bail on October 10, 2015, almost three months before his illegal detention by the police. The court later recalled the non-bailable warrants of arrest issued against Lal on his request. "The victim's wife approached the BHRC seeking action against the erring police men for illegal detention," said an official of the commission.
Taking cognisance of the victim's allegation, the BHRC chairperson directed the state government to pay the compensation amount to the petitioner's family and deduct the amount from the salary of the station house officer of Pirbahore police station in Patna.
The commission has sought an action taken report from the state government by April 27.
The copies of the order of the commission had also been sent to the principal secretary, home, director-general of police and senior superintendent of police of Patna.
