Bhagalpur, Dec. 17: The recovery of arms and ammunition and fatigues of Maoists at a training camp in Munger yesterday has punched a hole in police’s claims of demolishing the Red bastion in the eastern Bihar district.

Senior police officers in Munger and Jamui have realised the difficulty of containing the Maoist menace because many top Naxalite leaders, including a former “area commander” who had fled the security net during the Giridih ambush in November last year, are reorganising the outfit’s base in the area.

On May 11 this year, then inspector-general of police (Bhagalpur range) A.K. Ambedkar had publicly claimed that the security personnel had managed to drive away the rebels from the eastern Bihar districts. Seven months after the incident, Ambedkar’s successor, Jitendra Kumar, admitted that the rebels have once again stepped up their activities.

CRPF deputy inspector-general of police Umesh Kumar said arms and ammunition, uniform and medicines to treat malaria were found at the Maoist camp at Rameshwarkund inside the forest areas of Bhimbandh following search operations from December 15.
