Railway athletics event kicks off

The three-day All India Railway Protection Force Athletic Championship 2017 began on Wednesday at Mithilesh Stadium, with 15 teams participating.

Patna: The three-day All India Railway Protection Force Athletic Championship 2017 began on Wednesday at Mithilesh Stadium, with 15 teams participating.

Danapur RPF is hosting the championship, which Anup Kumar, additional general manager of east central railway (ECR), inaugurated on Wednesday.

The teams are: southern railway, central railway, eastern railway, east coast railway, northeast frontier railway, northern railway, north western railway, south central railway, south eastern railway, south east central railway, south western railway, west central railway, western railway, railway protection force and ECR.

The railway ministry will the send the winning team to the All Indian Police Athletic Championship.

On the first day, Santana Sarkar (15.41 seconds) of central railway came first in the 100m sprint for women, Chetalti Sardar (15.69 seconds) of central railway came second and Kaveri Mandal of ECR secured third position, finishing the race in 16.07 seconds.

N. Santhil Kumar (2.04.78 minutes) of southern railway secured first position in the 800m run for men, Mukhram (2.06.55 min) of central railway secured second position and Gajendra Gurjar of central railway secured third position with 2.07.11 min.

In the 800m run for women, Aspa Bharti of western railway came first, Arpana Kindo of central railway came second and Kanika Mahato of south eastern railway secured third position.

In high jump, Chitali Sardar of central railway came first, Jhuma Mistry of south eastern railway secured second position.

In the women's shot put event, Bharti H.L. came first, Manju Malik came second and Hivalni came third.

Senior officials present at the event included Ravindra Verma, chief security commissioner, and Danapur divisional railway manager Ranjan Prakash Thakur.
