Special vigilance unit sleuths on Tuesday carried out simultaneous raids on the office and residential premises of Saran deputy development commissioner Ravi Kant Tiwary and stumbled upon assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

Sources said the officials searched Tiwary's official residence in Chhapra and a private house at Rukkanpura in Patna. The raiding team seized Rs 2.4 lakh and documents related to the purchase of flats and several plots from the Rukkanpura house.

Tiwary was posted in Saran from Siwan in August last year. He was not present in the house at the time of the operation, which started around Monday midnight and continued till 6pm on Tuesday.

A relative said Tiwary was on duty at Sonepur cattle fair in Saran district. Tiwary refused to talk to the media. During investigation, it was found that Tiwary owned two houses in Patna.

He also bought a plot at Bhusaula (Phulwarisahrif) on the outskirts of Patna. He, allegedly showed less value of the property to evade taxes.

Tiwary had invested heavily in insurance policies and had hefty bank deposits. His bank accounts have been frozen.

Inspector-general of police, special vigilance unit, Anupama Nirlekar said: "The search was conducted after obtaining court permission. A disproportionate assets case has been lodged in Patna against Tiwary under sections 13 (2) and 13 (1) (E) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He has been accused of accumulating disproportionate assets worth Rs 68.75 lakh." The search was continuing when reports last came in. Sources said Tiwary always got prime postings in his 28-year service.

Criminal investigation department officers are probing his role in the appointment of a junior engineer on contract. The engineer was later removed by the DDC.

Last week, a disproportionate assets case was lodged against motor vehicles inspector K.K. Tripathy posted in Katihar for accumulating property worth Rs 1.09 crore.
