Police to intensify patrolling on bikes

Residents can expect police assistance at times of emergency on the city roads and bylanes from this month-end with senior officers preparing a blueprint to strengthen the Quick Mobile Service, launched two years ago.

The service was launched with an objective to ensure the presence of the police on roads, especially in narrow bylanes of the city, where police vans cannot enter.

According to the plan, two cops on a bike are supposed to patrol an area earmarked for them.

Patna city superintendent of police Jayant Kant on Monday told The Telegraph: “At present, there are 134 police bikes under the service. Every police station in the city has separate Quick Mobile Service teams. The personnel work on rotation. Each team comprises two cops. We are trying to strengthen the service further.”

Under the new plan, the police personnel have been directed to continuously patrol their respective areas.

“For example, if a bike with two cops patrols a certain area once, they will have to do the same after 10 minutes. During patrolling, they would have to buzz a siren so that people come to know that the cops are on the streets. We hope that these measures will give people a sense of confidence and safety,” he said.

Every bike deployed in Quick Mobile Service has a siren.

Kant said a definite patrolling route chart would be given to the patrolling teams. He said: “There was a route chart earlier but it was not followed properly. At present, we are preparing a fresh chart for the Quick Mobile Service and it has to be followed strictly.”

Several lanes and bylanes need a better and stronger Quick Mobile Service, feels Kant. “The Quick Mobile Service personnel would be given more responsibilities in the future,” he said.

The Quick Mobile Service was launched in the city in 2008. It failed to live up to the expectations of people at times.

“After the service was launched, we started spotting policemen on roads. But it needs improvement because we have often seen cops returning to a given lane after a gap of an hour or even more,” said a resident.

“The norm of patrolling an area every 10 minutes would improve the service for sure. The siren would also help increase the confidence of people,” he added.

Besides the Quick Mobile Service, the police are planning to strengthen the “Dial 100” service for more safety of the residents.

“The service is in existence but more lines will be attached to it. In the past, we have introduced many schemes to make this service more efficient and there is no need of introducing new ones,” Kant said.
