Patna, Aug. 19: The annual conference of Bihar and Jharkhand Association of Plastic Surgeons, 2017, hosted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna today saw three complicated surgeries being conducted by doctors from reputable hospitals at AIIMS-Patna.

Doctors reconstructed the lower jaw of a patient, using the fibula bone of the patient in a microsurgery led by doctor Prabha Yadav of Mumbai-based Tata Memorial Hospital, while Medanta Hospital-based doctor Rakesh Khajanchi performed a corrective jaw surgery on a patient and AIIMS-Patna's paediatric surgeon Bindey Kumar performed a surgery on a child suffering from hypospedias (a birth defect in boys in which the opening of the urethra is not located at the tip of the penis).

Seventy plastic surgeons from across the country took part in a continuing medical education programme at AIIMS-Patna as part of the conference.

Khajanchi also spoke about the role of 3-D imaging and role of printing in these types of reconstruction surgeries, while doctor VSP Sinha from Jamshedpur spoke about the hair transplant surgery and how its success depends on the gender and age of the concerned patient.

The organising secretary-cum-AIIMS-Patna plastic surgery department's doctor, Veena Singh, added that such programmes helped advance clinical knowledge of doctors.
