Patna, Dec. 11: A doctor allegedly removed a kidney of one of his patients during prostrate surgery on August 26. Two-and-a-half months on, the victim learnt about it after undergoing an ultrasonography test at a Lucknow-based diagnostic centre on November 12.
Arvind Kumar Singh (55), a resident of Kankerbagh, has lodged an FIR at Sri Krishna Puri police station against Dr Ranvir Prasad for allegedly removing his left kidney without his consent. Dr Piyush Saurabh, the son of the absconding doctor, claimed that the patient and his relatives were apprised of the removal the kidney soon after the surgery. “His (Singh) left kidney had got infected before he was admitted to the clinic with the prostrate problem,” he said.
Singh, in his complaint, alleged that Dr Prasad had diagnosed him with prostrate problem. He got it operated at RS Urology Institute and Kidney Centre on Boring Canal Road on August 26. “I was released from the clinic on August 30,” he said.
Singh said he sniffed foul play during morning and evening strolls after the surgery. “Earlier, I used to walk 3-4km everyday. After the surgery, I felt tired and even suffered from headache after walking just a kilometre,” he told the police. Singh, shouldering the responsibility of his wife, three sons and two daughters, contacted a Lucknow-based diagnostic centre for ultrasonography of abdomen on November 1. Its report revealed that his left kidney was missing.
“I met the doctor in the city with the report of the test conducted at the Lucknow-based institute,” Singh said.
The doctor, as Singh claimed, told him that his left kidney had got infected and was removed during the surgery. Singh said: “When I asked him how the kidney of a person can be removed without his consent, the doctor told me it was done to cure me.”
Singh said both his kidneys were functioning well according to the test conducted on July 1, 2011. Confirming that an FIR had been lodged against the doctor, station house officer of SK Puri police station Bhagwan Gupta said: “Since the matter is sensitive, I have sought directions from my seniors.”
Deputy superintendent of police (secretariat) K.K. Sharma said the allegation levelled on the doctor would be verified. “Prima facie it appears that the doctor removed the complainant’s kidney because it had got infected. But the case will be investigated from all angles,” he said.
The clinic where the complainant was operated upon wore a deserted look today. Some of its employees were removing its signboards. “Nobody is here to give you any comment,” a man standing in front of the clinic told The Telegraph.
Dr Saurabh said Singh could be used as a pawn by the clinic’s rivals to malign its image. A medical practitioner said no hospital in the city was equipped with kidney transplant facility.
