His was not designed by any Bollywood fashion masters nor was this a ramp but Dinesh Kumar Singh took everyone by surprise with his “mission prohibition”.

Clad in white kurta-pyjama painted with pictures, the lawmaker from Jagdishpur came to the first session of the Assembly on Monday to spread the message “how domestic violence is on the rise because of liquor”.

It was not an ordinary painting though. It depicted a wife ready with a broom while her husband holds two bottles of liquor even as two of their children are sitting quiet. Pictures of liquor bottles were also painted on the sleeves and the pyjama. It also had different slogans against sale of liquor written in several parts of the kurta.

Sharing the reason of wearing such a dress, Dinesh — who had protested against liquor sale by sneaking four bottles into the House during the budget session this year — said: “Liquor is the main cause of domestic violence. There should be complete ban on its sale. I just want to convey the message to other lawmakers that they must support me on this issue. Under the influence of liquor, people commit crime; incidents of loot, rape and murder are just taking place because of this.”

The RJD MLA added: “The government should immediately ban liquor sale; if they are worried about losing revenue, they should better collect this amount from the salary of their MPs and MLAs.”

The painting on his kurta-pyjama was done by Sukesh Kumar, an Ara-based fine arts teacher. “I have already started this campaign to ban the sale of liquor in my constituency and also going to start a signature campaign across the state to submit it to the governor. During the campaign, I will wear the same dress. It just took a few hours for the artist to make this painting and will request him to paint like this on five other kurta-pyjama sets.

In July, he had sat on a dharna outside the official chamber of water resources department minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary protesting against alleged negligence in releasing water to Bhojpur district. On Monday, Choudhary made fun of Dinesh: “You should better join Arvind Kejriwal’s party, that is a perfect place for you. What are you doing in the RJD?”

JD(U) chief whip Shravan Kumar, said: “You are looking good but this will not help you raise the issue today because the BJP leaders will not allow to function the proceedings.”

Many other leaders and watch-and-ward staff kept on looking him and the best part came from the JD(U) MLA, Gajanand Shahi alias Munna Shahi. “Come on yaar, what are you doing? Daru piyo aur mast raho (Live life with liquor), leave this protest.”
